On my Homeschooling Creatively list, a member posted a link to a new geography resource using the notebooking format. It featured the continent of Africa. My first thought was that I’d never seen notebooking or lapbooking work for my children. I’ve liked the idea of it, for sure, and bought a few in my day to try it, but it never went far. I even wrote a blog post about it once when notebooking was all the rage.
That said, being curious, I decided to go to the link and take a look, because I always want to stay open, and Africa was always a favorite continent to many of my children. Well, in theory, it seems more doable to me! The author customizes it, and I like that. The thing I like the most is that the author has the “almost filled-in versions.” My children didn’t like to be told what to look up and write down, which is what made them not want to do notebooking. They don’t look up information in this way. They do if they are interested from their own initiation…can’t be stopped, actually. But assign it to put into some fancy show-me-work…nuh-uh. (Here’s my post on that.) Since this has a version with the information already “almost filled in,” then it can be almost like a resource tool, with a few hands-on activities to go with it. Since this one seems different, I got it and am going to try it with my younger two. I’ll let you all know how it turns out! I put the link on my sidebar to the right.
Then I got to thinking about how so many people want to know what kinds of resources work for right-brained children. Though I haven’t been the type to link to resources on my blog in the past, I’m thinking people may find it useful. So, I decided to create a space here at The Right Side of Normal for anyone to contribute and write a little “review” of right-brained resources that have worked for you and your family! I’m hoping if enough of us contribute, it could become a really useful resource for new ideas.
Consider this an official call for right-brained resource reviews!
Go to the top of the website here under Resource List/Reviews and leave your contribution anywhere you’d like and I’ll find the correct home for it in the various categories. I just listed various subjects off the top of my head, but we can add as many as we want. I’ll create the various pages as fast as I can. Also, if you have a longer review on your own site or blog, I would be happy to link to it. I hope to be kept hopping! Help make this a great resource for those trying to best match resources for their right-brained children!
